City of Brisbane...Known Facts
Welcome home to Brisbane. The city nestled in between the San Bruno mountains which border bustling San Francisco and the Peninsula.
Brisbane is called "The City of Stars" because of a holiday tradition established over 65 years ago. It is a small city located in California in the northern part of San Mateo County on the lower slopes of San Bruno Mountain and borders south of San Francisco. At the start of the Christmas/Hanukkah season, many residents and business owners place large, illuminated stars, some as big as 10 feet (3.0 m) or more in diameter, on the downhill sides of homes and offices throughout Brisbane to share in the spirit of the holidays. In April 2012, West Coast Farmers Market Association (WCFMA) launched Brisbane's first-ever farmers' market. Five years later till the present, this local Farmers Market is a staple in the community, with the vendors who come to Brisbane, fall in love with the small-town atmosphere and with friendly local residents and shoppers!
Brisbane Library began service at its present location in 1981 and offers a vibrant space for the entire community. People of all ages enjoy our books, magazines, ebooks, CDs, DVDs, WiFi, classes, and programs--all for free. To support local interests, we are proud to offer a small local history collection. For more local history, explore the City's extensive collection at City Hall.
Brisbane has several parks and trails. At the center of town is the Community Park, which houses the city's main playground, as well as a beautiful gazebo and picnic tables. There is Quarry Road and its little park, Crocker Park Recreational Trail, Firth Park/Canyon, and Brisbane's Dog Park located behind city hall.
The City is proud to also co-sponsor Brisbane Dance Workshop, Live at Mission Blue, and the SF Shakespeare Event, hosted by the Brisbane Women's Club each Fall. And of course, if you prefer the outdoors and live music, then look no further than the annual Concerts in the Park and the Day in the Park/Derby Races, which take place in the late summer months and on the first Saturday in October, respectively.
As a tight-knit community of about 3,500 people, Brisbane is a great place to raise children. The community is committed to excellence in education for children of all ages. The City is active in encouraging schooling. At the preschool level, there is a preschool that the City's Parks and Recreation Department manages. It's located in Brisbane Elementary School. Additionally, Silverspot Cooperative Nursery School is in a City owned building with a public playground - known as the Silverspot Tot Lot. The Brisbane School District governs three schools: two elementary schools and one middle school. Brisbane Elementary and Lipman Middle School are located in Brisbane; Panorama Elementary is in Daly City.
